COCO MEMORIES

In 1912 Scotsman William Linton started Linton Mill in the Caldewgate area of Carlisle, a small city situated close to the Scottish border and near the famous Lake District.

William Linton’s great friend, Captain Molyneux, a Parisian couturier introduced him in the 1920s to a dynamic young lady called Coco Chanel. This began an association which has flourished over the years resulting in the house of Chanel being Linton’s biggest and most prestigious customer.

Today, whereas world-renown fashion houses create outstanding garments with exclusive Linton Tweed, we present the unique cushion collection Coco Memories bringing one of the most exclusive tweeds to your home.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF WOVEN FABRICS

Woven fabrics represent one of the oldest artistic traditions in mankind’s history. The art of weaving fabric, in its most basic form, essentially involves intertwining a series of vertical threads, known as the warp, with a series of horizontal threads, known as the weft.

Prior to the 19th Century, the main fibers used to produce yarn were natural – made primarily from wool, silk, and cotton. But new advancements in science allowed for new materials to be produced including nylon and polyester.

Tweed was first developed in rural Scotland as a woolen twill using patterns of herringbone, check, speckled and houndstooth. It emerged as a fashionable cloth to make garments during the 1820s.

THE WORLD'S MOST INNOVATIVE FABRICS

Scotsman William Linton was keen to get on the booming tweed and woven fabric export, founding Linton Tweeds in 1912 in the Caldewgate area of Carlisle, a small city situated close to the Scottish border and near the famous Lake District.

Initially Linton employed two salesmen with ponies and traps who travelled the Lake District buying wool and selling woolen suit lengths.

Linton’s great friend, Captain Molyneux, a Parisian couturier introduced him in the 1920s to a dynamic young lady called Coco Chanel. This began an association which has flourished over the years resulting in the house of Chanel being Linton’s biggest and most prestigious customer.

Today, Linton Tweeds is known to manufacture the world’s most innovative fabrics. At this tiny mill in Britain, the wool is spun, dyed and crafted into exclusive fabrics that grace the catwalks of the world’s most renown fashion houses.
